After working as an economist in the Scottish Office in Edinburgh in the 1980s, Alan Seatter served as an official in the European Commission on a range of policies including regional development, financial management, the enlargement of the EU, science and technology, external relations including the Middle East, EEA and the industrialised countries, coordination of the Commission’s regulatory proposals, and finally as deputy Director General for the environment.
