Aberdeen, 26th April 2024 – The SNP Climate & Environment Group (SNP-CEG), a growing force within the SNP dedicated to addressing climate change and environmental issues, today announced its formal request for affiliate status and the creation of an elected Climate & Environment Convener role within the SNP. These structural changes are aimed at enhancing the party’s environmental credibility and ensuring the further advancement of urgently needed climate & environment policy.
Since its establishment in December 2021, SNP-CEG has been instrumental in advancing climate and environmental resolutions within the party. Despite these successes, the group’s influence is limited without formal affiliation and a dedicated convening role, hindering its ability to spearhead substantial environmental initiatives.
The Need for Immediate environmental action
The urgency of this structural enhancement is underscored by the SNP’s own declaration of a climate emergency, notably through the resolution “Climate and Ecological Emergency” passed on 29 November 2021. This resolution mandates immediate and substantial action to tackle the climate crisis – a challenge that SNP-CEG is eager to lead, with the right structural support.
Past Efforts and Future Goals
Previous attempts to secure a formal pathway for affiliation have not come to fruition. The lack of a defined affiliation process restricts SNP-CEG’s potential to influence significant environmental policy changes.
The proposal aligns with the resolution passed at the National Conference in September 2021, which established the role of Climate and Environment Officer across all branches and constituency associations. The proposed role of a Climate and Environment Convener would serve to coordinate and enhance the work of these officers, reinforcing the SNP’s commitment to environmental leadership.
Affiliate status within the party would allow SNP-CEG to directly propose resolutions as well as underscoring how seriously the party takes the perilous Climate and Ecological Emergency.
