Home Shape of Things to Come Bikes, Buses and Blimps

Predictions for buses and bikes are doable. But not quite sure about the other B-word?

In the seventh and penultimate chapter of our 2023 Shape of Things to Come series, George Allison makes three serious and one thought provoking prediction for public transport in 2023

It is always a challenge to make predictions, to envisage specific events or developments that may take place in the future.

However, I’m going to try and do it anyway. Here are a few potential public transport developments that could take place in Scotland in 2023.

              Bike-sharing programmes and other initiatives

There are already initiatives in place to encourage the use of active transportation such as cycling. It’s possible that, in 2023, we see the expansion of bike-sharing programmes in the country.

This could include the introduction of new bike-sharing stations in major cities and towns. Development of new technologies could make it easier for people to access and use bike-sharing services and incorporate biking into their daily lives.

The introduction of a new electric bus fleet

Scotland already has several initiatives in place to reduce its carbon footprint and improve air quality. It is possible that a new fleet of electric buses will be introduced in major cities and towns.

These electric buses could use advanced battery technology that provide clean and efficient transportation. It would make it easier for people to travel within Scotland while reducing their environmental impact.

The implementation of a new ticketing system

There’s a number of public transportation systems in Scotland that still use traditional paper tickets or cash fares. Possibly 2023 will see the introduction of systems that allow for more convenient and secure payment options. Verification of ticket purchases might include the use of smart cards, mobile phone payments or facial recognition technology.

These new technologies could potentially be introduced on all modes of public transportation, including buses, trains, and ferries, making it easier for passengers to pay for their fares and track their travel history.

And now for something a wee bit different; the B-word

It may be stretching it a bit but what about blimps, aka airships? These large, lighter-than-air vehicles are propelled by engines and can be used for transportation. While they are not currently a common mode of transportation, it is possible a new blimp transportation system will be introduced in Scotland that’s unique and environmentally friendly.

Blimps could be used to connect major cities or remote destinations within Scotland and offer an alternative to traditional modes of transport. They could potentially be powered by clean energy sources such as solar panels and hydrogen fuel cells. All in all it would provide unique and memorable transportation experience.

Again, it is important to note these are just predictions. not facts. We all know it is, of course, impossible to predict with certainty what the future will bring. After all, just look back over 2022
