This happened last year but it is still important to me.

As I huddled in my sleeping bag, trying to stay warm on the cold Glasgow streets, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of sadness wash over me. It was Christmas Eve, and I was homeless.

I had lost my job a few months ago and, before I knew it, I was unable to pay my rent. I had no family or friends to turn to, and before I knew it, I was living on the streets.

As I lay there, feeling sorry for myself, I couldn’t help but think about all the people out there who were spending Christmas with their loved ones, surrounded by warmth and joy. I felt a pang of jealousy and loneliness wash over me.

But then, something miraculous happened. A group of volunteers from a local church approached me, offering me a warm meal and a place to stay for the night. They told me about a shelter for the homeless that was open on Christmas Eve, and offered to take me there.

I was hesitant at first, but I eventually agreed. As I followed the volunteers to the shelter, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of hope wash over me. Maybe, just maybe, I wouldn’t have to spend Christmas alone on the streets after all.

When we arrived at the shelter, I was overwhelmed by the warmth and kindness of the people there. They welcomed me with open arms, offering me a warm bed, a hot meal, and even a few small gifts.

For the first time in a long time, I felt a sense of belonging and joy. I wasn’t alone on Christmas after all. I was surrounded by kind, compassionate people who cared about me.

As I lay in bed that night, surrounded by the warmth and love of the shelter, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the kindness of strangers. It was a Christmas that I would never forget.

This Christmas I am now in a nice home with my partner. I have a job and for the first time in a long time, I am happy.
