Conformity – age

A poem which investigates the notion of age and conformity

A photo of a grey-haired lady with a look of amused joyous surprise on her face. She is holding on to a pole and is wearing a white blouse and a wooden beaded necklace. In the background there is a grey-haired man with a hat looking at her. The image of him is slightly blurred.

Conformity

There may be a time in our life when pressure to conform is applied. It can happen to anyone, of any age, and for numerous reasons. However, when some reach ‘a certain age’ they may be expected to conform to what some in society see as the ‘social norm’. Unless they are rich and famous and can do as they wish! Some may even want them confined to homes for the aged, usually shoebox size!

While bodies age, our minds stay young, still full of hope and joy.
In this great place we still possess the youth of times gone by.
We climb, we soar, the planet explore, seek its treasures and delights,
‘Till one sad day cruel world steps in with disapproval and dismay.

Age has no right to be young it roars: embarrassment we cause!
Then seeds of doubt in minds are sown, to grow, and to destroy.
They push aside who we are and the person we hoped to be,
The plans we made, and dreams we had, must now be put away.

They say we cannot do or wear the things of youthful habit.
Into a box we now must place, our mindset and behaviour.
The world belongs to youth alone, no more a place for age,
We must conform to societal norms, or we will stand disgraced!

Into a cubicle where rules constrict, we find ourselves corralled.
The world we knew, no more to be, and to their views submit.
Our realm once bright and full of joy, is now a colourless hue.
Open space and freedom’s choice, with solid walls are now replaced.

Conformity won when we succumbed, we lost our right to be.
Now entombed, with broken hearts; with society we now comply.
We once of hope and passion strong, are restricted and restrained,
The world we sought now out of reach, our souls they are detained.
