Can you help us raise £2,000.00 so we can continue to make Bylines Scotland a successful and influential part of the media landscape in Scotland?

Can you support us with a £20 donation (or more)? Click here to invest in us.

At Bylines Scotland we would like to:

  • Hold live events to meet readers & encourage more people to write for us.
  • Advertise more to boost our readership.
  • Meet modest expenses to enable our writers to travel to cover more issues
  • Win a higher profile via good social media platforms.
  • Invest in software to improve our radio and visual offer.
  • Help secure the support services vital to our ability to publish.

Now in its third year, Bylines Scotland has carved out a niche as a place that offers ordinary people (and some extraordinary people) a platform to be heard.

We provide a place to discuss and debate a great many issues. Issues often ignored or given scant attention by mainstream media.

Bylines Scotland has no financial or management links to any mainstream media.

Publications like ours speak truth to power. In a world where power is too often deaf to fair enquiry and blind to truth, we have a role to play.

We are part of a global movement of citizen journalists who believe in liberal democracy, human rights and the right of the citizen to speak freely, truthfully and with respect for others.

We want to do more, so we’re asking our readers and friends to invest a little cash in us so we can be a bigger fish in Scotland’s media pond.

We are citizen journalists.

Our role as writers and editors is to produce fact-based, thoughtful, informative and well-written news, comment and analysis. We also seek to entertain and be a distinctive window on the world.

Every word we publish is written by people who don’t get and don’t expect to be paid.

Our editor and sub-editors don’t get paid either. In fact, nobody who gives any of their time to Bylines Scotland ever benefits financially.

But as part of the UK-wide Bylines Network, it costs money to pay the people who run and maintain our IT, provide legal and accountancy services, manage our relationship with the regulatory body, Impress, and manage the overall development of the 10 publications in the network.

Our contributors write articulate, stylish, informative and well-researched articles. We believe in facts and evidence as much as we believe in opinion, ideas and exploration.

Among many other issues, we cover Scottish, UK, European and international politics, economics, education, health, history, environment, conservation and the arts and culture.

Our writers discuss big issues like Brexit, controversial industrial developments, the tourism economy, the case for a Scottish currency, nuclear energy and climate change.

Everyone who writes for us buys into the idea of writing in moderation, in language, tone and style. We champion open debate. We welcome opposing points of view. We will not publish the sectarian, the racist, the misogynist or the demonisation of minorities or the vulnerable.

Our weekly readership averages 6000 a week.

Most of our readers are, of course, in Scotland, though our international reach is growing.

Bylines Scotland now has regular readers across the UK and Ireland, Europe, Canada, the USA, Australia and New Zealand.

We have grown our presence on BlueSky to 32,000 followers, at the latest count.

And Bylines Scotland Radio is winning listeners across the world.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you have donated, thank you.

If you are still thinking about donating and have any questions, please e-mail editor@bylines.scot

We will publish the progress of our fundraising drive every three months and a final tally at the end of the fourth quarter. Thank you, and one more thing.  Thank you for reading Bylines Scotland. We are nothing without our readers.

More in Scotland.
